Good Morning Britain viewers were left annoyed as they picked up on Susanna Reid's habit when interviewing on the show. The presenter was back fronting the ITV news programme on Tuesday (January 17) and was again with co-host Ed Balls, who is one of the show's number of main male hosts.
It was another busy show in which Susanna and Ed were joined live in the studio by the Metropolitan Police commissioner. Sir Mark Rowley's appearance on the show came after news broke on Monday (January 16) that a serving Metropolitan Police officer, David Carrick, admitted to 24 counts of rape against 12 women over a 17-year period.
Discussing the headlines, she said it was ‘disgusting’ and ‘shocking’ that Carrick was able to police for so many years. Co-star Ed said the crimes were 'beyond belief'. He continued: "I thought I was quite hardened to things turning out bad but this is beyond what you could have thought was possible."
They wasted no time in questioning Sir Mark, who has claimed that some officers serving in the Metropolitan Police need to be identified and removed from the force. He was asked on the programme if he could guarantee that a woman visiting a police station to report a sexual offence would not meet a police officer whose past behaviour was now under review, or who was tolerating similar behaviour in their department.
"I can’t, I’m not going to make a promise that I can’t stick to," he said. "I’m going to put in place ruthless systems to squeeze out those who shouldn’t be with us. Most of our officers are fantastic, the people who specialised in this area are great and they have the skills. But do I have some officers who shouldn’t be in the Met that I’ve got to identify and get rid of? Yes I do, and I’m completely frank about that."
Sir Mark also said that the Met Police has not dealt with its own integrity with "the ruthlessness and clarity" that it deals with criminals. "It’s not a good situation, that’s why we’re reviewing it. I came back to policing four months ago because I’m passionate about policing," he said.
"Most of our men and women are great people, but we have not been tough enough at guarding our own integrity. We haven’t dealt with these issues, day in and day out for years, with the ruthlessness and clarity that we deal with criminals. And that’s what we’re getting on top of."
But during the interview, GMB viewers flocked to social media to critique Susanna's approach to the interview with Sir Mark, who has been the Met's commissioner since September 2022. @AJ8malone tweeted: "Asks a question, and he tries to answer she interrupts straight away #GMB."
But @PeterAtkinson said: "Susanna Reid, are you going to ask the same question repeatedly hoping that he makes a fool of himself. You do have a habit of it. #GMB." @JamesDawson911 fumed: "#GMB Jesus christ susanna stop banging on about the same question..HOW DO I KNOW THAT HOW DO I KNOW THAT ..you don't know NOBODY KNOWS until they get caught."
