ITV Good Morning Britain viewers demand apology as Ben Shephard snaps and tells Kate Garraway to 'be quiet'

Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway were back at the helm of Good Morning Britain on Friday morning (December 2) to deliver the latest headlines. The pair are regular co-hosts of the ITV news programme, which airs every weekday morning, alongside Susanna Reid and relief presenters including Richard Madeley, Ed Balls and Ranvir Singh.

The hosts discuss everything from breaking news from around the world, to the latest showbiz and sports news. In today's segment Ben and Kate were joined by the Mirror's Darren Lewis to discuss the most recent results from the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The presenters and their guest dived straight into talking about last night's result from the controversial Germany and Japan game, which saw Japan knock 2014 champions Germany out of the tournament in Qatar.

Ben appeared to show his passion for the game as he gave his opinion in a debate on whether Japan's winning goal 'crossed the line'.

Discussing the image of the ball being 'over the line' which his sparked worldwide controversy, Darren said: "That image there is the controversy. I know you're going to pick up the slack Ben with gaffer tape and a ball so I'll let you do that for now."

As Ben began to explain and said: "Let me try and..." he was soon interrupted by his co-host Kate who said "to get Charlotte and I to get this you...".

But the football fan put his hand up and quickly told his co-host "you need to be quiet for a second."

Kate folded her arms and responded: "Oh, nobody told me that."

Ben then tried to continue explaining the offside rule, but was interrupted again by guest Jacqui Smith who said: "Women don't know about football, be quiet."

Appearing to get frustrated, Ben said: "Oh Jacqui, stop it, don't encourage her."

He then finally delivered his explanation of the football law: "So, if the whole ball goes out of play then the ball's out of play. So the Japanese player managed to cross the ball back in and Japan scored the goal to take the lead."

Ben then pulled out a football and duct tape to give a live demonstration, after telling Kate to "move your papers woman."

Kate then added: "Oh god, be quiet and move up I didn't agree to this."

But despite Ben and Kate appearing to laugh off their heated discussion, some GMB viewers thought Ben was out of order.

@englishwinnie10 tweeted: "Very patronising Ben! And Kate, you’re making all women look like fools when it comes to football and this is going to make men think & continue to believe all women haven’t a clue about football."

@BrendaK44543266 wrote: "Ben Shephard you need to apologise for being rude to Kate telling her to be quiet and calling her woman ! who do you think you are."

But @rae_mufc disagreed: "Ben telling Kate to shut up has made my morning. They are hilarious! Love them both."
