ITV Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley divides viewers over comment about the Queen

Richard Madeley sparked a divide among some Good Morning Britain viewers when he tried to carefully make a comment about the Queen. The presenter was back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Tuesday (June 21) alongside Ranvir Singh.

Among the topics of conversation on today's show was Prince William who has marked turning 40 by releasing a photo of him experiencing what it's like to be a Big Issue seller. He accompanied the photo by setting out his key birthday as a turning point, pledging more help for those who are struggling.

He vowed to continue to raise the issue of homelessness in an article for the Big Issue, after taking on a stint as a seller of the magazine on the streets of London earlier this month. "I have always believed in using my platform to help tell those stories and to bring attention and action to those who are struggling," he said.

"I plan to do that now I’m turning 40, even more than I have in the past. So, for my part, I commit to continue doing what I can to shine a spotlight on this solvable issue not just today, but in the months and years to come."

Royal commentator Emily Andrews and historian Tessa Dunlop appeared on GMB to discuss the Duke of Cambridge's milestone as well as debate whether he can be the one to update the Royal Family. But presenter Richard shut down claims the Duke would be able to modernise the monarchy anytime soon.

But it was his question to Emily, who believes William is capable of transforming the royal family., that caught GMB viewers' attention. "How can he shake up the Royal Family given that he's not going to be the king for ages?" the 66-year-old asked.

He then added with a slight hesitation in the middle: "I mean Charles is going to take the throne when the Queen finally exits and he is going to be there for a good while I think as he is a heart man. It's going to be decades before William can do anything so this is all a bit empty isn't it?"

Taking to Twitter, @__tom__2104__ said: "@GMB 'When the Queen finally exits.' You could have worded that a lot better." @pipjcee fumed: "'….When the Queen finally exits' How bloody rude and disrespectful Richard!! #GMB."

But @Sweggers quizzed the viewers: "#gmb How would you have expressed it?" While @PERSIMONE argued: "Jeez man she’s human and will drop dead at some point. So stop being such an idiot."
