ITV Good Morning Britain: Ofcom receives hundreds of complaints about Richard Madeley comments

The fall-out from Richard Madeley's comments on Good Morning Britain about Keir Starmer on Wednesday, February 16, continues.

Viewers of the ITV show have lodged more than 800 complaints after comments on air by the TV presenter.

Madeley has been back as a regular host on the show alongside Susanna Reid.

During the episode Richard and his then co-host Ranvir Singh spoke about the death threats which had reportedly been sent to the Labour leader, reported Manchester Evening News.

It revealed that an investigation had been launched into the threats made against Sir Keir after Boris Johnson made a claim about the opposition leader and Jimmy Savile.

Richard and co-host Ranvir were talking to Andrew Pierce, consultant editor of the Daily Mail, and Kevin Maguire, associate editor at the Daily Mirror at the time.

As they discussed the latest news headlines, Andrew remarked in response to the Sir Keir story that ‘"politicians get that all the time."

This led Richard to say: "Well I was going to say, actually, is it that big a deal?"

After backlash from GMB viewers on social media, Richard returned to the show the following day on February 17 and shared a message to clear things up.

As he sat alongside co-host Charlotte Hawkins, the 65-year-old said: "It was a really busy show yesterday, we had so much to do. I want to say one thing very quickly at the top here," he said early into the start of the latest show.

"I tried to pose a question on one of our early discussions on the programme about how prolific online death threats are. I didn’t actually quite press it properly, I didn’t go into it enough.

"I just want to reiterate the obvious statement that death threats clearly are never acceptable."

But his statement didn't satisfy some viewers with hundred lodging an official complaint with Ofcom

The broadcasting watchdog confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that they had received 855 complaints relating to Richard's comments.

Richard started the conversation during the show in question by saying: "Shall we quickly touch on Keir Starmer, because the row over what Boris said in the Commons about Jimmy Savile rumbles on, now we learn yesterday that Keir Starmer says he’s getting death threats online.

"People calling for his execution."

On February 14 Sir Keir confirmed he received death threats.

But he said he would rather not talk about the matter because he did not want his young children to hear “too much” of what may be said about him.
