ITV GMB viewers spot awkward moment as Susanna Reid contradicts Richard Madeley

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid contradicted Richard Madeley as they disagreed over the latest pictures of Boris Johnson drinking at a lockdown party.

On Monday, pictures emerged of Boris Johnson apparently drinking wine at a lockdown-busting event for which he was not fined. Mr Johnson received a fixed-penalty notice (FPN) over a birthday party in the Cabinet Room in June 2020 but was told he would face no further action over other gatherings covered by the Metropolitan Police's Operation Hillman inquiry.

Those included the November 13 2020 gathering to mark former spin doctor Lee Cain's departure from No 10, an event at which pictures obtained by ITV apparently showed Mr Johnson raising a toast and drinking wine.

Responding to the photos and claims, Cabinet minister Grant Shapps appeared on GMB. He insisted Boris Johnson did not lie to Parliament about the leaving do at which he was pictured raising a toast, because a party was "usually a formally organised thing".

The Transport Secretary said: "He did not knowingly lie."

Mr Shapps added that Mr Johnson stepped into the leaving do "because his - probably - officials" told him to go and thank the departing member of staff. The Prime Minister then "raises a glass, thanks them, leaves with those red boxes you can see there in the background, and does his work".

"So, a party in Downing Street is usually a formally organised thing."

However, Richard Madeley enraged Susanna Reid as he told Mr Shapps: "Quite a large proportion [of people] don't care anymore in a sense that the bubble of anger burst quite a few weeks ago and that reading the room you can actually tough this out."

Susanna interrupted saying: "They're not the messages I'm reading sorry Richard."

Viewers instantly took to Twitter to react to Susanna's comments.

One said: "Watching @susannareid100’s face as #RichardMadeley who described himself as apolitical says that #GMB viewers are saying move on from #Partygate she firmly points out not the messages she’s reading.

Matt added: "The look on Susanna’s face as he says it though."

Karen said: "Four seconds in, the look on Susanna's face!"
