Good Morning Britain hosts Ben Shepard and Charlotte Hawkins took a swipe at the UK Government on Friday after being told no ministers were available to join them on the show. The presenters said that producers were told they didn't have time for them in their 'busy schedule'.
It comes after the Bank of England 'doomsday' forecast of recession, warning that inflation will peak at more than 13%. Presenter Charlotte Hawkins told viewers: "As the government faces criticism for being absent at a time of crisis, we did invite a government minister on the show this morning but were told they didn't have time for us in their busy schedule. If any ministers are watching, our chair in Westminster is ready and waiting for you."
Responding to his colleague, Ben Sheppard said: "Kwasi Kwarteng is doing some of the rounds this morning, but whether he chooses to join us... we'd love to have him in."
Despite this though, no minister appeared on the breakfast show to discuss the decision to hike the bank's base interest rate to 1.75 per cent from 1.25 per cent, the biggest single rise since 1995, as they tried to control the runaway inflation.
Consumer Prices Index inflation will hit 13.3 per cent in October, the highest for more than 42 years, if regulator Ofgem hikes the price cap on energy bills to around £3,450, the Bank's forecasters said.
The energy price will push the economy into a five-quarter recession - with gross domestic product (GDP) shrinking each quarter in 2023.
