Danny Miller has both baffled ITV viewers and come under fire after he made an 'unnecessary' comment about Stephen Mulhern during the National Television Awards. The Emmerdale star got up on stage with his I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! 2021 cast mates when the series picked up an award.
The ITV reality show won The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award with the Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly-fronted show up against their own programme, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Taskmaster and The Graham Norton Show.
Danny, who won I'm A Celeb last year during its second stint at a Welsh castle, led the cast onto the stage following the win as Ant and Dec weren't at the awards show to collect the gong after both testing positive for Covid.
But the actor, known for playing Emmerdale's Aaron Dingle, made a comment at Stephen - who was sitting in the audience - during the speech.
Danny said: "Just on behalf of Ant and Dec who unfortunately have Covid so they can't be here tonight, and Stephen Mulhern is in the crowd so not sure why he hasn't accepted the award on behalf of them." The camera quickly locked in on the TV star who pulled a funny face.
And viewers watched the NTAs live on ITV flocked to comment. One tweeted: "What was that dig at Stephen Mulhern about? He obviously didn't come and accept the award on their behalf because he's got nothing to do with I'm a Celeb? Seems an unnecessary comment by Danny..."
"Well Danny’s speech was ….. surprised face of Stephen Mulhern. Why would he have collected the award for Ant & Dec. #ntawards," another said. A third asked "Why was Danny so shady towards Steven Mulhern there? 'Not sure why he isn’t up here?' #NTAs."
But Danny has since hit back. Posting a smiling selfie of the pair in the audience at the NTAs all suited and booted, the dad-of-one wrote: "Don't believe everything you read. A good friend and a personal joke @stephenmulhern."
He also posed with the NTA in front of the stage a the glittering bash and penned on Instagram: Thanks to everyone who voted, means the world. And a privilege to pick this up on behalf of the finest @antanddec @officialntas What a show, what a production, still can’t believe I had the privilege to take part!"
Danny also shared a brilliant video of his Emmerdale co-star Mark Charnock, who picked up an award for Serial Performance, looking completely perplexed at bagging the gong. "Champs Champ!!!" Danny captioned the clip.
