Emmerdale fans were close to making official complaints during the latest episode before a much-welcome change at the end of the half-hour trip to the Dales. The ITV soap was back on screens on Wednesday night (October 26) and viewers saw the continued fallout from the storm and death of Faith Dingle.
Earlier this week, Paddy Kirk thought that bringing Vinny Dingle the dog he was due to adopt with his wife Liv would help him in his grief after she was tragically killed in the horror windstorm that swept the Yorkshire village last week.
As Chip made her way into the house with a nervous yet well-meaning Paddy, Vinny lost it. "What? Mine and Liv's rescue dog?" he remarked upon seeing the animal as Paddy explained: "Sort of, I know you thought you were getting a male dog but she's a b**ch. God knows how they got that wrong! Anyway, we think Chip kind of suits her and we thought..."
But the widow snapped: "We've not even had Liv's funeral yet and now you're trying to replace her with a dog!" Mandy was quick to explain as she said: "No, you know we didn't mean it like that. As you were going to have her anyway, we thought that she might be a good distraction..."
Despite refuisng to have anything to do with the dog but Mandy and Paddy left the innocent pet with him anyway. Later, as he came to get a drink from the kitchen, Vinny told the doe-eyed pup that he still 'wasn't interested'.
"Still here then," he remarked to the dog who was tucking into a bowl of food before looking at her potential owner. "Look, I'm not interested... I'm sorry. Someone else will have to look after you as it sure as hell won't be me..."
Mandy, however, wasn't going to let it go and returned to see Vinny and encouraged him to take Chip out for a walk. But it didn't go very well when the new dog just stopped and stared at her new, frustrated, owner in the woods.
And Vinny became angry at Chip and lobbed her ball off into the trees, telling the dog to go after it. She still refused to move, leading to Vinny storming off and leaving his new pet alone. The upsetting scenes soon saw Emmerdale fans flocking to social media to complain.
@Dan240993 tweeted: "I know Vinny is hurting but you cannot leave the dog on it’s own that’s just cruel. #Emmerdale." @fussyMcWhiskers said in response: "#emmerdale If Chip gets run over, I'm writing to Ofcom. Emmerdale writers can kill off characters...but innocent animals - NO! Too much!"
@Bzth shared: "Nahhh Vinny being mean to the dog is too hard to watch #emmerdale." @suzysasha fumed: "#Emmerdale Vinny is rotten little t**t! Poor wee dog. How can he be so heartless." @peggyca01602562 added: "I had an upset about a dog today irl and now Vinny is abandoning a dog on #emmerdale Wish I could reach in to the TV and give Vinny a good shake."
However, things soon took a sudden turn for the better as wehn Vinny arrived back home, Chip was already there waiting and brough him a photo of Vinny with Liv, which he had dropped while out.
Vinny was reduced to tears as lowered to his knees on the floor next to a waiting Chip and the photo. Later, as Mandy and Paddy arrived to check up on the pair, Vinny could be seen watching TV with his new dog, appearing to show his affection towards the pup for the first time and told recognised that he was pushing his loved ones away.
And fans were relieved - and emotional - to see the change. @Danielle92_xo tweeted: "Chip bringing the photo to Vinny. I think Chip could help him through if he lets the dog #Emmerdale." @MattZeeMiller said: "#emmerdale the dog the star of the show tonight was worried was gonna be left missing glad found its way back awwww." @_lauraharvey__ added: "Chip the dog [crying emoji]. Fave actor EVER. #emmerdale."
