ITV Coronation Street: The real life of Peter Barlow actor Chris Gascoyne with soap star wife and drink battles

Coronation Street's Peter Barlow has been embroiled in some of the soap's most scandalous storylines.

But actor Chris Gascoyne has really made the character his own since hitting the cobbles in 2000.

Reformed alcoholic Peter led a double life for a period with his fair share of his affairs, having had five wives.

It's a different story in Chris' real life though, as the 53-year-old actor from Nottinghamshire has been happily married for 20 years.

He tied the knot with fellow soap star Caroline Harding in 2002, and they have one daughter together, Belle, 18.

Chris is also step-dad to Caroline's two children from a previous marriage with Line of Duty actor Jason Watkins - with Pip, 22, and Freddie, 24.

The Mirror reports the pair met when they went to see their mutual friend Catherine Tate performing at London's Comedy Store.

After the show, they went for a walk through Soho together, and he later got her number from Catherine.

They moved to Manchester when Chris became the seventh actor to play Peter, and now live in the popular south Manchester suburb of Chorlton.

In an interview in 2010, Corrie star Chris said: "If someone had said to me in my 20s that I'd have dated a divorced mum with kids, I would have said 'no way'.

"But it kind of made me feel closer to her. It was a very real relationship very quickly. I saw this amazing strength in her and I loved her kids Freddie and Pip."

Caroline has played multiple roles in ITV's Emmerdale, including Dr Garrett in 2013, and has also had stints in Weatherfield.

Most recently, the actress played Dr Howarth, who treated little Oliver Battersby, and told the court of how it would be an act of kindness to switch off his life support.

Meanwhile, Chris has previously opened up on relating to his portrayal of Peter, who was on born on screen during an episode broadcast on April 5, 1965.

He confessed to using drink as a crutch to overcome problems in his life and in 2008, he was banned from driving for a year and fined £500 for drink driving in Llandudno, North Wales.

Two years later in an interview, Chris, who trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, explained there was an excessive drinking culture during his younger years, the Mirror reports.

"When I was younger I did use to drink an awful lot. I think you get seduced by it when you're a young actor," he said.

"You're surrounded by a drinking culture and it's almost a romantic thing. Everywhere you go it's there.

"I still like a night out, but it had gone past that to a pointless place where I was looking always to seek oblivion in it. You come home and you're hungover and you get drinker's guilt.

"You feel depressed and ill and wonder what you've said to people.

"Then you vow never to do it again, until it gets to opening time and then you think you'll have a drink and those feelings stop.

"It went on for a good 10 years, but after a while I realised I was drinking for reasons that were no longer social.

"It was no longer purely about having a good time.

"I was never an alcoholic, but a lot of us have problems with alcohol - anything that affects your life or your judgement is a problem."
