ITV Coronation Street's George star shares joy over on-screen sister as fans react to casting

Tony Maudsley appears to be happy as he shared his reaction at his on-screen sister being cast in Coronation Street. It was revealed today that Jodie Prenger will be joining the ITV soap as George Shuttleworth's sister, Glenda.

The arrival of the 'fun and sassy' character, currently planned for August, comes as George continues to struggle with the arrival of a blast from his past in the shape of former school bully Frank Bardsley. Last month Frank, played by Simon O'Brien, made his first appearance in Weatherfield where he hit it off with Sean Tully.

The pair have since been enjoying dates but George was left to confess his true feelings about Frank to Eileen Grimshaw and despite his best efforts to see if Frank had changed his ways, the undertaker found himself unable to get over his past and decided to go back home, leaving Eileen in the home she shares with Sean, son Todd and friend Mary.

But things are about to take a turn for the better for George when another familiar face arrives in Weatherfield - his sister Glenda, played by actress and singer Jodie who has fulfilled a lifelong dream of being cast as cruise performer Glenda, and has already started filming on the famous cobbles.

Following the big reveal, Jodie took to Instagram with a picture of her and Tony outside Victoria Garden on the famous street and said "Thrilled doesn’t scratch the surface. Had to say a massive thank you for all the lovely messages about Glenda today. Means the world." She then added: "And I tell ya what, they are the loveliest bunch at Coronation Street, they really are. Big hugs and love to all."

Tony, who is also famed for playing Kenneth in Benidorm, also shared his reaction, taking to Twitter and resharing Corrie's announcement. He added: "Can't wait for you all to meet our Glenda. You're gonna LOVE her!!" And fans have also been having their say on the casting.

@ProwseGillian tweeted: "Oh she is going to be great I can tell! Good luck Jodie, hope you have a great time!" @tracyheywood64 said: "Excellent that the writers are bringing in extended family members to George, we need him to have more storylines - he is a great character. Jodie will be fab!" @pinkrockylady shared: "Perfect casting."

@terrettcorey said in response to Corrie's post: "Still thinking about this perfect casting and surprised it took this long... #corrie." @miss1katy shared: "Wow how exciting!! Love Jodie and think she'll be fab in @itvcorrie."

Blackpool-born Jodie has said of landing her latest role: "I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it’s been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little. It’s an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long.

"And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part. I can't wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth's sister. I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella! Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wrecking experiences you’ll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more."
