Italian restaurant group takes full ownership of Dorset eatery

A restaurant group based across Dorset and Somerset has acquired outright ownership of its flagship site after securing £350,000 in funding.

Tamburino opened its first Italian restaurant in Yeovil almost 20 years ago, and has since added eateries in Clarks Village in Street and Sherborne.

The family-run business, which employs 40 members of staff across the three locations, has now purchased the freehold of the Sherborne property, with plans in place to further invest in its workforce over the next year.

It comes after Tamburino saw sales at the restaurant reach “record levels” over the festive period. The company added that buying the space would allow it more control over previous costs associated with renting.

Director Domenico Taravella said when the opportunity to take ownership of the Sherborne restaurant came, “we knew we had to do it”

Mr Taravella said: “Our roots in the South West date back almost 18 years, so when we got the opportunity to take ownership of our flagship restaurant in Sherborne, we knew we had to do it. Buying the restaurant reinforces our commitment to the local area and will allow us to be flexible in our plans for the business as we continue to provide the best Italian cuisine for our loyal customers.

“Dorset’s rolling Jurassic coastline and countryside villages attract thousands of visitors every year and have really strong communities, so we feel very fortunate to be trading in this part of the world.”

Tamburino secured the money to help finance the purchase from Lloyds Bank. Simon Davidson, relationship manager at the bank, said: “The UK hospitality industry has enjoyed a resurgence since the end of the pandemic and, although businesses are continuing to face staffing challenges, we’re seeing customers continue to enjoy spending locally.

“Domenico and his team's passion for delivering quality service, coupled with using locally-sourced produce, has helped create a very successful brand.”
