Federal food safety officials have issued their most serious class of recall notice for imported Italian pork guanciale distributed to restaurants, distributors, and retail counters in eight states, after a government laboratory sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The alert was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service and covers about 1,513 pounds of dry-cured pork jowl.
Prime Line Distributors, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Ferrarini USA, based in Hoboken, New Jersey, are recalling the product. FSIS classified the action as Class I, the designation reserved for situations in which eating the food carries a reasonable probability of serious illness or death. No illnesses have been linked to the product so far.
