'It would blow my head off' - Rio Ferdinand's verdict as Marcus Rashford left out of England starting XI

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Marcus Rashford will be frustrated about being dropped to the bench for England's World Cup Round of 16 clash against Senegal.

The Reds forward has scored three goals at the tournament in Qatar and is currently the Three Lions' top goalscorer, however, manager Gareth Southgate opted to start him on the bench for the crucial clash with the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions.

Rashford grabbed a brace for England in the 3-0 victory over Wales earlier this week, and the 25-year-old also got on the scoresheet in the opening Group B match against Iran.

Speaking before the official line-up had been announced, ex-United centre-back Ferdinand claimed he would have been annoyed at being dropped while in such good form, arguing that Rashford should have been included in the starting line-up.

"Imagine hitting red hot form in the World Cup then sitting on the bench, it would blow my head off. If you’re thinking as a professional and as an athlete you’re saying 'get me out there,'" said Ferdinand on ITV.

"But Gareth’s got a lot of decisions right, if he shuffles the pack and gets it right, we’ll be happy."

Jermaine Jenas also suggested that the Reds forward - who has scored eight goals for Erik ten Hag's side this season - should be a certain starter for the Three Lions.

He said: "I don’t see how he leaves him out… Essentially when Gareth turns around and realises he needs something to happen or get himself a goal, he’s turning to Marcus Rashford straight away and players who can change the game.

"Phil Foden was brilliant in the game as well, it was always going to be one of them because Saka didn’t deserve to be left out either, good options but it’s unfortunate for Marcus he’s not starting."

Former Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has not been named in the England squad for the game against Senegal, with the Chelsea man dealing with a family matter.
