When they first started out, Everything Everything felt like imposters. The four-piece had landed in Manchester via the North and South East, so, as frontman Jonathan Higgs explains over the phone, calling themselves a ‘Manchester’ band felt like a bit of a push.
Now though, things are a little different. “As far as I’m concerned we’re a Manchester band and I feel we’ve been accepted as one,” says Higgs, who along with his three band mates, has successfully released six albums and been nominated for both the Mercury Music Prize and the Ivor Novello.
“Maybe we were always accepted as such, but to start with we felt like imposters because I knew we were not from here and there’s such a rich music history that to say we’re a Manchester band felt a little unrealistic. But, I’ve been here 20 years and I’ve seen our band on lists with other hometown bands and it makes me really proud to see that we’re on the totem pole - however far down we may be!”
