'It's going to end in a good way' - David de Gea gives update on new Manchester United contract

David de Gea expects discussions over a new contract at Manchester United to "end in a good way".

United have opened talks over a renewal for De Gea, 32, who is technically out of contract in the summer but United have the option of an additional year.

De Gea, who joined United in 2011, outlined his intention to spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford in the summer and he is optimistic of extending his stay beyond 12 years.

"Yeah, I'm very relaxed," De Gea told the MEN. "Just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it's going to end in a good way."

When asked if he was confident of seeing out his career at United, De Gea replied: "I hope so. I was saying this is my club, I've been here many, many years and it's a huge honour to be here and I'm so happy here."

De Gea is United's highest earner on £375,000 a week but his salary was reduced by 25% to £281,250 this season as United failed to qualify for the Champions League.

De Gea kept his 177th clean sheet for United in the 3-0 defeat of Bournemouth and is now three shy of equalling Peter Schmiechel's club record. The Spaniard also moved into the top 10 appearance-makers in United's history in what was his 510th appearance. Remaining at United for a 13th season would almost certainly see De Gea overtake Alex Stepney's goalkeeper appearance record of 539.

United have not conceded at home in the Premier League since September 4 and only Nick Pope has kept more clean sheets than De Gea this term. The Bournemouth win was De Gea's third consecutive shutout.

"So happy, a massive three points for us, we controlled the game really well, just the last 15 or 20 minutes they had some good chances as well but probably the players feel a bit tired at the end," De Gea said.

"It was a bit difficult at the end but we controlled the game really well, we played well, a massive three points for us and I'm enjoying because some players, we changed two centre-backs today and they played really well, so the squad is ready to play.

"I feel comfortable with everyone, everyone is training really well, they are ready to play, so they showed again today. Once again, it doesn't matter who is playing, everyone is ready to perform like today and it's great to have a proper squad.

"Everyone is ready, everyone is focused, everyone is training really well, everyone is in the same direction, so this is massive. It doesn't matter who is playing.

"Even the subs today, it doesn't matter who came in, they put everything on the pitch, we have great team spirit and for me it's great to see the players play in this way."

United resume their Premier League campaign against Manchester City in the second derby of the season on January 14. Brighton remain the only opponents to have achieved a domestic victory at Old Trafford this term.

"That's how it should be to come here - it should be a tough place for the teams," De Gea said of United's home record. "Let's see in the future.

"We are playing really well, we have to keep the momentum as much as we can and prepare every game as a final and recover well. We have to recover really well because we play a lot of games (this month)."
