It's been a year since filming of the megahit Muster Dogs wrapped. Where are they all now?

'Muster Dogs' stars reunite for the annual Casterton Kelpie Muster

It's the murmur you hear first from the crowd.

"Ooh, there's Frank.

"Is that Annie with him?

"And Lucifer?"

And then the rush begins.

Phones are pulled from pockets and purses, and suddenly the canine stars of Muster Dogs and their trainers are surrounded by selfie-seeking fans.

The Casterton Kelpie Muster's star attractions this year were Frank Finger and Rob Tuncks, sitting on top of a truck leading the street parade with their two kelpies beside them.

"The greatest thing about Muster Dogs was that it wasn't scripted, we weren't told what to say, we just showed people what we did every day," Frank says with a touch of pride.

Joe Spicer, who bred the pups that ended up in the show, says Muster Dogs changed the perception of country people.

"How we care about our stock and our land and our dogs and the connection we have."

If you were one of the few who missed the sensation that was Muster Dogs, five contestants were each given a puppy from the same litter to train into a valuable working dog with a winner declared in the final episode.

One year later

It's exactly a year since filming finished and CJ, Aticia, Joni, Frank and Rob and their dogs Spice, Gossip, Chet, Annie and Lucifer headed back to their normal lives.

They had no idea what was to come.

When the series aired earlier this year on the ABC it immediately resonated with viewers and the unlikely stars discovered some things were never going to be the same again.

Rob and Lucifer

Rob admits the Muster Dogs phenomenon was "way bigger than [he] ever thought it was going to be".

"I volunteer for the CFA (Country Fire Authority) and the others will tease me when I turn up, 'Oh here comes the movie star'," he says with a laugh.

Viewers were taken on an emotional rollercoaster when Rob decided in the final episode to give up his dog Lucifer to series winner Frank, admitting they weren't the right fit.

A year later at the Casterton Kelpie Muster, the Victorian sheep farmer reunited with the larrikin pup he'd cursed on screen as "you little bastard".

Lucifer has definitely matured working with Frank on his central Queensland property.

And he also has a new name.

"I've called him Luci," Frank says.

"I know it's a girl's name, but dogs are what you call them, and Johnny Cash had a boy named Sue 50 years ago.

"He still does some random things, let's put it that way."

Breeder Joe Spicer is on hand in Casterton to check out the pups he handed over and reckons Luci has developed "fantastically!"

"I ask people, 'What were you like as a kid?' And they say, 'Oh, I was a bit naughty.' And I say, 'Well, I was a shit of a kid, but I grew up into someone who is productive and a team player.' "

Luci will be just fine.

Frank and Annie

Frank still spoils his winning dog Annie and thinks nothing of sweeping her up into his arms for photos with fans.

"Lovely dog, lovely dog," he says, repeating the phrase that's now entered the Muster Dogs lexicon.

"I didn't realise I said it so much!"

He promises he doesn't play favourites.

"Because they're litter mates I don't work them together but I spend as much time with Annie as I do with Luci."

Frank and the dogs drove more than 2,000 kilometres from Clermont in Queensland to Casterton for the show.

"We're not doing anything different, it's just that it's come to the public's attention," he said.

It's been a busy year with shows and official engagements and running their own dog schools.

He's also had to get Annie used to the crowds that follow her everywhere.

He darts off after the parade to buy the Queensland acclimatised dogs winter coats to help ward off the Victorian winter chill.

CJ and Spice

CJ says Spice has been fantastic and they've had a good season. The weather has been good to them and Spice has developed into a terrific working dog and loves "working the lead".

Spice just needed that bit of extra time to mature.

She did develop a pet hate of pythons during the wet season, though, after encountering one too many.

Joni and Chet

Chet, who won hearts with his wild and quirky personality, now works alongside Joni's 20 other dogs. (Supplied)

Chet had viewers laughing with the way he leapt into his new world on the road with Joni.

He's become "the perfect soldier" working in the yards, alongside Joni's 20 other dogs.

"He tends to run into the back of my legs knocking me for six because he's so eager to get there," she says.

"I put him on a tail of weaners and left him for a couple of hours so he handled the responsibility well."

Aticia and Gossip

Aticia and Gossip have continued training while enjoying seeing the country come alive on the back of a generous wet season.

While Gossip is becoming more considered in her work style, her bravery has never faltered and neither has her voice box.

Aticia and Joni have worked together since filming wrapped with Aticia hosting Joni's Cattledge school on her family property.

Muster Dogs is available on ABC iview. A second series of the hit show is now in development.
