Tonyrefail star of It's a Sin, Callum Scott Howells has scored a role in a major West End production of Cabaret, which has already won seven Olivier Awards since its debut in December 2021. Callum, who shot to prominence in Russell T Davies' drama as Colin, one of a group of friends in the 1980s affected by the AIDs crisis, will take over the role of The Emcee.
Since It's a Sin aired Callum has been filming Netflix film The Beautiful Game opposite Bill Nighy and has won the BAFTA Cymru Award for Leading Actor and the Royal Television Society Award for Best Male Actor. For the same role, he was twice nominated at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards; for Best Supporting Actor and Virgin Media’s Must See Moment.
The 23-year-old, who will play the role from October 3, 2022 until January 28, 2023, said of getting the role: "I can't wait to work with the incredible team and company, and follow on from two actors who I hugely respect and admire. I feel very lucky and excited to be taking on such an iconic role within this widely celebrated and unique production. It's going to be a ride."
London's The Playhouse Theatre has been transformed into the famous Kit Kat Club from John Van Druten's play, based on stories by Christopher Isherwood, and initially starred Eddie Redmayne and Jesse Buckley. During Callum's run the role of Sally Bowles will be played by Emmy Award-winning star of The Handmaid's Tale, Madeline Brewer.
Audiences closer to home will also be able to see Callum perform this December with Treorchy Male Choir at St David's Hall in a Christmas concert to raise money for Ty Hafan. That show will be on Tuesday, December 6.
