In the heart of the Gaza Strip, Israel's military has intensified its offensive, as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East. One focal point of Israel's operation is Han Eunice, an area heavily targeted by the IDF. Embedded with the 55th Brigade, our team experienced firsthand the harsh realities of this conflict.
As we drove into Gaza, the threat of ambushes from underground tunnels became apparent. Troops informed us that there are more than 5,000 of these fortified tunnels, often used by Hamas. Just last night, the IDF destroyed one of these tunnels, located about a quarter of a mile from the Israeli border.
Deeper into the strip, we witnessed the aftermath of flattened suburbs and heard the constant sound of artillery overhead. Our journey took us to a school in Khan Yunis, where Israeli soldiers discovered that Hamas had hidden weapons and constructed a tunnel beneath the playground. This incident exemplifies the nature of this war, with Hamas fighters popping up unexpectedly and engaging in combat.
While we waited outside the school, an explosion shook the area, yet the soldiers remained unfazed. The visibility diminished as ash fell from the sky, and the smell of smoke hung heavy in the air. The absence of a defined front line in this conflict meant that ground battles were taking place at close range in every direction.
The IDF's approach is systematic, with troops steadily dismantling Hamas' infrastructure zone by zone. However, the cost of this operation is immense. As we observed, many of the two million displaced people in Gaza have had to flee their homes. Areas like Khan Yunis have been leveled, leaving landscapes devoid of any structures as far as the eye can see.
It's important to note that journalists can only access Gaza by embedding with the IDF. Ahead of this report, the necessary precautions were taken to ensure the anonymity and safety of individuals involved, such as blurring faces and concealing specific locations.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip shows no signs of abating. As both sides continue to engage in combat, it is the civilian population that bears the brunt of the violence and displacement.
