Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put forth a proposal to rename the ongoing conflict that began after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks to be called the 'Resurrection War.' The current name of the conflict is 'Swords of Iron.'
During a government meeting commemorating the one-year anniversary of the attacks, Netanyahu emphasized the significance of the proposed name change, stating, 'This is the ‘resurrection war’ to ensure that October 7 never happens again.' He described the conflict as a battle for the nation's survival, asserting that it will only conclude once all objectives are achieved, including the destruction of Hamas, the safe return of hostages, prevention of future threats from Gaza, and the repatriation of displaced citizens in the northern regions.
Netanyahu highlighted the severity of the 2023 Hamas attacks, comparing them to the Holocaust and emphasizing the resolve of the Israeli people to confront their adversaries. In response to the proposed name change, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government's handling of the crisis, stating, 'You can change as many names as you’d like, (but) you won’t change the fact that under your watch, the worst catastrophe in Israel’s history has occurred.'
The Hostage Families Forum issued a statement underscoring the importance of securing the release of all hostages, emphasizing that true 'resurrection' cannot occur without the safe return of all captives.
