Recent Israeli airstrikes in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh have resulted in a tragic loss of life and significant injuries. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the airstrikes killed 16 people and left 52 others wounded.
The attack, which involved at least 10 airstrikes, caused extensive damage in Nabatiyeh. Governor Howaida Turk described the aftermath as resembling a 'fire belt' in a video interview with Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed TV.
Among the casualties were Nabatiyeh Mayor Ahmad Kahil and several of his colleagues. The city officials were attending a routine crisis management meeting at the municipal building when it was struck by Israeli forces on Wednesday morning.
In addition to targeting the municipal building, the airstrikes hit local markets, residential buildings, a university, and even historic sites such as a mosque, as reported by the Lebanese state news agency NNA.
Gov. Turk expressed condemnation for the attack, particularly highlighting the targeting of a government building that had been providing aid to displaced individuals in the region.
The Israel Defense Forces justified the airstrikes by claiming they were targeting Hezbollah's Radwan Forces and dismantling what they alleged to be underground infrastructure used by the militant group.
The situation in Nabatiyeh remains tense as the community grapples with the aftermath of the devastating airstrikes and mourns the loss of lives. International observers are closely monitoring the developments in the region as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate.
