Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, in a recent statement, expressed his expectation that the United States would cease funding the UN if it votes to grant the Palestinian Authority (PA) full UN membership. The Ambassador highlighted that such a move would be in violation of the UN Charter.
The Ambassador emphasized that passing a resolution to grant state status and rights to the PA would prompt the US to completely halt its funding to the UN and its affiliated institutions, citing American law as the basis for this action.
He criticized the PA for exploiting what he referred to as the automatic majority and moral decline within the UN. The Ambassador noted that the Palestinians' attempt to secure member state status through the Security Council had failed, leading them to circumvent the Council's procedures and bring the decision to the General Assembly.
Furthermore, the Ambassador argued that if the resolution were to pass, it would not alter the situation on the ground but rather demonstrate the UN's detachment from reality and its inadvertent support for terrorism.
The upcoming General Assembly meeting on Friday follows the US veto of a Security Council resolution in April that aimed to recognize a Palestinian state. The ongoing tensions and diplomatic maneuvers surrounding the Palestinian statehood issue continue to shape the dynamics within the UN and the broader international community.
