Israel has issued rare evacuation orders in central and western Beirut, including a busy commercial district near the American University of Beirut. The orders were issued by Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee on X. This move has raised concerns as evacuation orders are often followed by intense bombing campaigns, although Israel hasn’t targeted the area in decades.
The areas slated for targeting include the Hamra street area, a bustling commercial district near two American universities – less than a kilometer away from the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University. Additionally, residential areas of Mazraa, Zkak Blatt, and Moussaitbeh, which are Sunni-majority districts far from areas of Hezbollah influence, are also included in the evacuation orders.
It is noted that tens of thousands of displaced people from various parts of the country have sought refuge in these areas, adding to the complexity and urgency of the situation. The evacuation orders have sparked fears and uncertainties among residents and businesses in the affected areas.
