Islanders defeat Ducks for fifth straight as Cal Clutterbuck scores twice, Robin Lehner earns third shutout

NEW YORK _ Cal Clutterbuck scored twice and the Islanders extended their latest win streak to five games with a thorough 3-0 victory over the Ducks on Sunday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 13,917 at NYCB Live's Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders (29-15-4), who have won 15 of 18, extended their lead in the Metropolitan Division to three points over both the Capitals and Blue Jackets. They've allowed just three goals in this win streak and have back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season after Friday night's 2-0 win at Washington.

This is the Islanders' third win streak of at least five games this season. They've done so previously in only two other seasons, 1978-79 and 1982-83, per team statistician Eric Hornick.

Robin Lehner made 19 saves as he earned his third shutout and won for the 11th time in 12 decisions. He's either allowed one goal or not allowed a goal in eight of those appearances.

Ex-Islander Chad Johnson stopped 25 shots for the Ducks (21-20-9).

Clutterbuck opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:50 of the first period with a shot from the slot after Josh Bailey knocked the puck down with his glove in the right circle and fed it to the middle. Clutterbuck made it 2-0 at 9:56 from nearly the same spot as he deposited the rebound of defenseman Adam Pelech's slap shot from the point.

It marked the sixth two-goal game in Clutterbuck's 11 NHL seasons, though the 31-year-old does not have a hat trick. He has six goals this season, including three in two games and four in five games.

Leo Komarov extended the lead to 3-0 with 28.1 seconds left in the second period as he deflected down defenseman Devon Toews' floating shot from the left point.

The Islanders conclude a stretch of nine games in 15 days on Tuesday night at Chicago before heading into the All-Star break and then their bye week. They don't resume their schedule until Feb. 1 against the Lightning at the Coliseum.
