Isla Bryson crimes were committed by a man, Police Scotland confirms

The sickening crimes committed by Isla Bryson will be recorded as having been committed by a male, Police Scotland has confirmed.

The transgender rapist from Clydebank attacked two women in 2016 and 2019 while she was living as a man known as Adam Graham.

The 31-year-old was last night transferred from Cornton Vale to a male prison in Edinburgh following uproar at the original decision to send her to a women's jail.

Widespread speculation on social media suggested that official crime statistics would log Bryson's crimes as having been committed by a woman.

But a Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed to the Record that because the offences took place before Graham's transition, they would be recorded as being the act of a male.

A police spokeswoman said: "The accused was arrested and charged in 2019 as a man, and the crimes were recorded as such."

It comes as a former governor of Cornton Vale branded the jailing of Bryson an "unnecessary shambles".

Rhona Hotchkiss, who ran the women's prison until 2017, said she would have refused to admit the rapist.

"I would have refused to have this person in Cornton Vale, I'm afraid. It just goes against all natural justice," she told BBC Scotland.

"I would have insisted there was no reason for this person to be assessed in Cornton Vale. It's wrong to use segregation when it's not strictly necessary and in my opinion that's what has happened here."

Nicola Sturgeon announced in Holyrood yesterday that Bryson would not serve her sentence in the women's prison.

She told MSPs: "It would not be appropriate for me, in respect of any prisoner, to give details of where they are being incarcerated.

"But given the understandable public and parliamentary concern in this case, I can confirm to Parliament that this prisoner will not be incarcerated at Cornton Vale women’s prison.

"I hope that provides assurance to the public."

The case was raised by Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross, who questioned why Bryson had initially been placed in the female-only jail after being remanded into custody prior to sentencing.

Branding Bryson a "beast", Ross said: "This double rapist only decided to change gender after he was charged by the police.

"It took the threat of jail for this criminal to decide to change his gender. That’s not a coincidence, that is a conscious decision.

"We think it is wrong that a rapist is sent to a women’s prison. We believe a rapist having access to a women’s single-sex space is a threat."
