Is the stock market open on Black Friday in 2024? The answer to this question is yes. The stock market will be open Friday, November 29, for the annual shopping event.
However, investors will need to watch the clock closely. This is because the stock market will not be open for regular trading hours, which run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday. Rather, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will close early, at 1 pm Eastern time, on Black Friday.
Bond traders will have to stick around just a little longer on Friday, November 29, with the bond markets open until 2 pm that day.
If history is any guide, stocks could continue momentum into year's end. According to Yardeni Research, the S&P 500 has finished December higher 69 times since 1928 – the most of any month. The index has averaged a 1.3% gain in December over that time frame, coming in third behind April (+1.4%) and July (1.7%) as the strongest month for stocks.
As for Black Friday, the early dismissal will give investors a chance to scoop up some of the hottest shopping deals of the holiday season. While many stores started early sales this year – including Target, Walmart and Costco – there are still plenty of deals to be found. And while in recent years, many shops have adjusted their store hours, plenty of spots such as Best Buy and Macy's still offer early Black Friday shopping hours.
