'Is Open AI ChatGPT Safe?' Google searches soar 614% as Elon Musk warns of 'profound' AI risk

Google searches asking “is ChatGPT safe?” have soared by 614% in recent days as people worry about the impact artificial intelligence (AI) on their future. It comes as Elon Musk was among the tech experts calling for a pause in the training of powerful AI systems.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO is one of more than 1,000 people to have signed an open letter issued by the non-profit Future of Life Institute which warns AI could "pose profound risks to society and humanity". The letter calls for a six-month halt to the "out-of-control race" to develop systems even more powerful than OpenAI's a language model 'chatbot' ChatGPT.

Earlier this month, Mr Musk claimed to have donated $100 million to OpenAI when it was a non-profit company. He expressed surprise that "it somehow became a $30B market cap for-profit".

The Future of Life Institute letter was also signed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Yoshua Benigo - who is seen as one of the "godfathers of AI". It reads: "AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and acknowledged by top AI labs. As stated in the widely-endorsed Asilomar AI Principles, Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources.

"Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even though recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control. Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks, and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth?

"Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?

"Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. "

Google Trends data, discovered by leading Crypto education platform Cryptomaniaks.com, reveals that people all around the world are also unsure how safe ChatGPT is, with searches for “is ChatGPT safe?” increasing by a massive 614% since March 16th.

A spokesperson for Cryptomaniaks.com commented on the data: "As AI technology like ChatGPT continues to advance and integrate into our daily lives, it's vital to address the safety concerns that are emerging. This surge in searches highlights the need for greater public education and transparency around AI systems and their potential risks."

"It's important to recognize that AI, like ChatGPT, holds immense potential for revolutionizing various industries, but it's essential to strike a balance between innovation and safety. Developers, users, and regulators must work together to create guidelines that ensure responsible development and deployment of AI technology."

"As AI systems become increasingly sophisticated and integrated into society, it is our collective responsibility to stay informed about potential risks and actively engage in discussions about AI safety. We must embrace the benefits of AI while diligently mitigating potential harm, ensuring a secure and beneficial future for all."

When ChatGTP was asked if AI was safe, it responded: "As an AI language model, I am not capable of having opinions or beliefs, but I can provide you with information on why AI is generally considered safe.

"AI technology is designed to function within a specific set of rules and guidelines, and it operates based on the data it is trained on. This means that if the data is unbiased and the rules are designed to prioritize safety, the AI will also prioritize safety. Additionally, AI can analyze large amounts of data at a much faster rate than humans, which can help detect and prevent safety risks before they become a problem.

"Furthermore, AI technology is being developed with safety in mind, and many AI researchers and developers are working to create responsible guidelines and regulations to ensure that AI technology is developed and deployed in a safe and beneficial manner. As AI technology continues to advance, it is essential that developers, users, and regulators work together to create responsible guidelines that prioritize safety.

"While it is important to acknowledge the potential risks associated with AI technology, it is also important to recognize the benefits that AI can bring to various industries, including healthcare, finance, and transportation. With responsible development and deployment, AI technology has the potential to revolutionize these industries and improve the quality of life for people around the world."
