Is Now the Time To Improve Your Work Skills? Suze Orman Says Yes!

In a blog post, Suze Orman said right now, it’s especially important for people to invest in themselves and their career skill sets due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). Those who can adapt to changing work environments and understand technological advancements can be a resource to companies, rather than being replaced by AI. Research from Harvard Business Review found that 39% of organizations it surveyed have already reduced their workforce due to AI, but Orman has some tips on how to stand out.

She explained you don’t have to go back to school to stay relevant at work. Here are ways to improve your work skills.

How Certificates Can Help People Progress at Work

Orman explained that the economy is at risk of slowing. She said slowdowns can lead to layoffs, which is why it’s more important than ever for people to improve their skills or even pivot to new careers. The best way to do that is by learning new skills and earning certificates.

For example, getting a project management certification could help workers get promoted into a leadership position. Employees can go from being a small part of a larger team to learning the necessary skills to keep projects on track. Another example is getting a data analytics certificate. This certificate can help creatives, such as writers, photographers and videographers, learn how to evaluate the success of projects online and allocate advertising dollars.

Finally, Orman said it’s important for people to check with their Human Resources department at work to see whether or not their company offers tuition assistance for certificate programs or specific online programs that teach valuable skills. Additionally, Orman encouraged employees to be proactive at work by asking to attend conferences and workshops that can help them become assets at work. This can help employees stand out at work and show their commitment to bettering themselves, making them less likely to be cut during a round of layoffs.
