In a significant move hinting at the imminent announcement of Kamala Harris' vice presidential pick, three of her top contenders have cleared their weekend schedules. This development fuels speculation that the decision on her running mate will soon be revealed.
Sources close to the campaign have reported that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have all canceled their planned activities for the upcoming weekend. This unexpected move has led many to believe that Harris will be meeting with these finalists in the coming days to finalize her decision.
Other potential VP candidates are Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Vice President Harris is scheduled to be in Washington DC, without anything in her agenda. Politics insiders are speculating that she has set aside this weekend to have face to face meetings with the top contenders. She is expected to announce her pick for a running mate on Tuesday.
This are the three aspirants to the VP slot that have announced changes in their schedules:
Andy Beshear: A Rising Star
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, known for his moderate stance and focus on everyday American issues, has recently ramped up his criticism of former President Donald Trump. His success in a traditionally Republican state, particularly in carrying rural counties that are strongholds for Trump, has made him a compelling choice for the VP slot. Beshear's emphasis on core issues such as jobs, healthcare, and public safety resonates with a broad swath of the electorate.
Pete Buttigieg: The Young Veteran
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who made a splash in the 2020 Democratic primaries with his message of generational change, remains a formidable contender, and has also cleared his schedule for this weekend.
Despite struggling to gain traction with Black voters during his presidential bid, Buttigieg has maintained a high profile in the Biden administration. His background as an Afghanistan war veteran and his Harvard and Rhodes Scholar credentials add to his appeal.
Josh Shapiro
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has canceled a series of fundraisers in the Hamptons this weekend, initially planned to generate support for his PAC, according to his press secretary, Manuel Bonder, on Thursday.
"His schedule has changed, and he is no longer traveling to the Hamptons this weekend," Bonder stated.
The formal vetting process, conducted by a law firm, has concluded, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed. These upcoming in-person meetings are among the final steps before Vice President Kamala Harris announces her pick. Eric Holder, former Attorney General under President Barack Obama, led the vetting process for Harris in his capacity as senior counsel at Covington & Burling LLP.
