Maryland had many ITV viewers asking the same question before it had even started - is it based on a true story? And the three part drama wraps up on Wednesday night.
ITV has tasted great success with series based on real life events over the past year, with ratings wins from The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, based on the insurance scam staged by 'canoe man' John Darwin and his wife AnnE, Maxine Peake drama Anne, based on a parent's fight for justice after losing her son in the Hillsborough disaster and, most recently, The Hunt for Raoul Moat, based on the events of summer 2010 and the headline hitting search for killer Moat.
On Sunday night, viewers were gripped by the finale of Malpractice, which while not based on actual events, was heavily inspired by the experiences of former doctor Grace Ofori-Attah, who moved into screenwriting following a 15-year medical career.

Preview adverts for Maryland have been on heavy rotation on ITV for weeks, with the Maryland cast led by Vigil star Suranne Jones, as she continues to film the second series of the BBC drama.
Buit, unlike some of its predecessors, Maryland is NOT a true story and was actually created by BAFTA and RTS award winning actress, Suranne Jones, and screenwriter Anne-Marie O'Connor.
Maryland is about two sisters, Becca and Rosaline, who are forced to reunite, years after drifting apart, when their mum's boidy is found on the Isle of Man. Given they had no idea their mother had any sort of link with the Isle, the siblings are understandably shocked and are forced to admit they did not know their mother anywhere near as much as they thought, as her actions have some pretty major consequences.
An ITV teaser for Mary;and added: "How much do we really know about the people we call our own? A moving, funny and, at times, difficult exploration of family dynamics, Maryland is an intricately observed relationship drama with a love story between two sisters at its heart.
