Is ITV Our House based on a true story? Martin Compston thriller comes to a close

ITV's Our House is scheduled to conclude tonight with the final episode hitting our screens at 9pm on the channel, as Martin Compston highlighted on Lorraine this morning.

The series is truly the stuff of first-world nightmares, as leading lady Fi (Tuppence Middleton) arrives at her home to find it empty of her belongings and new people living there.

Fans have been either loving the new series, or picking apart the plot-holes they have found within the show - but one thing that ties these two sides together is whether this story is true or not.

Martin has been praised for his performance as the despicable character Bram who is tormenting estranged wife Fi, and the question is rife - is the bad guy Bram a real person?

Is Our House based on a real story?

According to acclaimed author of the original book that the series was based on, no, the show is not a real-life depiction of a true story.

Author Louise Candish wrote Our House back in April 2018, and it has since picked up the prize for Crime & Thriller Book of the Year at the British Book Awards 2019.

However, according to an interview Louise had with the Washington Post, the property fraud is based on something she had read in a London newspaper before.

Speaking to the press, Louise had said: "Properties have become overvalued, and people have become these accidental millionaires living in fairly average houses.

“At the same time, a whole terrible industry of property fraud has grown up. I really wanted to write about a crime that I hadn’t read about before in fiction.”

So, while Bram and Fi might not be real people that Louise has come across, the idea of property fraud is a longstanding one, and can be traced back to the idea behind this exciting new show.

The final episode of ITV's Our House will air on the channel tonight at 9pm, with the other three instalments available to catch up on the ITV Hub website.
