Is Fortnite down? Server status patchy as Epic investigates matchmaking issues

Fortnite players are currently struggling to get into matches as the game's matchmaking servers are experiencing issues. Epic Games are currently aware of the situation and are looking into it and will announce when the servers are back to their normal operations.

Fortnite players who are eager to get some early morning games in today – perhaps to complete the Lock On pistol quest before this week's quests arrive later today – are seemingly out of luck, as the title's matchmaking servers are currently experiencing a 'partial outage', according to the Epic Games status website, but all other services related to the game appear to be operational.

Epic Games took to its @FortniteStatus Twitter account to acknowledge the downtime and assure players the downtime is being investigated, promising to let players know when it's all sorted out. The tweet in question was around an hour ago at the time of writing, so players surely won't have to wait too much longer for the server issues to be sorted out. You should be able to get back on and visit the Fortnite x Coachella island or complete the Eren Jaeger Quests in no time. Hopefully, these server issues won't repeat themselves when the Fortnite x Star Wars content launches next week with Fortnite Update 24.30.

Downtime blues

We booted up the game ourselves to check out what's going on and we were treated to an estimated wait time of over two hours, it didn't take nearly that long to get a match, but we were stuck on the loading screen for an extended period before eventually quitting the client entirely. However, we tried again a little bit after and got into a game with no issues, and we were able to run about and play as normal, so it's likely a roll of the dice on whether you'll be able to play right now or not.

Since the matchmaking is listed as a 'partial outage' on the Epic Games Status site, some players may have worse luck than us and will still be unable to get into matches. You could always keep trying to load into matches and hopefully get into a game (there was 100 players in the game we got into so clearly it's working for a fair few people), but your best bet is probably to wait until Epic Games announce when the servers are once again live, but we'll be sure to keep you updated as we find out more.
