With a market cap of $19.5 billion, Best Buy Co., Inc. (BBY) is a leading technology retailer focused on enriching lives through technology by combining tech expertise with personalized customer service. The company serves customers through its online platform, stores, and in-home services, addressing a wide range of everyday technology needs.
Companies valued at more than $10 billion are generally considered “large-cap” stocks, and Best Buy fits this criterion perfectly. Best Buy operates more than 1,000 stores across the United States and Canada and employs more than 85,000 people.
Shares of the Richfield, Minnesota-based company have declined 3.1% from its 52-week high of $95.85. Over the past three months, its shares have increased 24.3%, exceeding the Dow Jones Industrial Average's ($DOWI) marginal rise during the same period.
BBY stock is up 38.7% on a YTD basis, outperforming DOWI's 7.5% gain. Moreover, shares of the consumer electronics retailer have soared nearly 26% over the past 52 weeks, compared to DOWI's 12% return over the same time frame.
The stock has been trading above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since late May.
Best Buy has outperformed due to a recovery in comparable sales, particularly across computing, mobile, gaming, and other electronics categories. The company is also expanding higher-margin growth areas such as its marketplace, advertising business, and Geek Squad services, supporting margin improvement.
In comparison, rival Ulta Beauty, Inc. (ULTA) has lagged behind BBY stock. ULTA stock has declined 10.6% YTD and risen 1.2% over the past 52 weeks.
Despite BBY stock’s outperformance, analysts remain cautious about its prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of “Hold” from 24 analysts in coverage, and as of writing, it is trading above the mean price target of $87.10.
