Over €50,900 has been raised for an Irish woman after her health took a critical turn while on holiday in Greece.
Monica Quinn from Ballyshannon, Donegal, has pancreatic cancer and travelled to the country with her family and friends for a week-long trip away.
However, her health suddenly deteriorated while they were in Rhodes, Greece, leaving her unable to travel home on a commercial flight.
A GoFundMe page was created for the Donegal woman and has received over 720 donations from those wishing her well.
The fundraiser’s description said: “Our mum, wife, sister and dear friend Monica is currently in critical condition in Rhodes, Greece. Monica has pancreatic cancer and was cleared to go to Greece on a holiday for a week with family and friends.
“Unfortunately during her time in Greece, Monica took ill and was taken into hospital where her condition worsened.”
Now, Monica is in critical condition, making her unable to travel back home on a commercial flight.
The description continued: “Monica can only travel home by air ambulance, which is a huge financial cost that the family is unable to pay for alone. We are pleading with anyone to please take a moment and help Monica come home.”
Since the fundraiser was set up, €50,955 has been raised for Monica’s safe return to Ireland. 727 people gave donations towards the journey, with many leaving messages of well wishes, prayers and support. Some also sent birthday wishes to the Ballyshannon woman.
The organiser of ‘ Let’s bring Monica home ’, Aislinn Quinn, wrote on the page on October 2 and said: “Thank you to everyone that has donated and helped raise the funds to get Monica home!
“We can’t thank you all enough. You are all amazing.”
Donations have now been closed on the GoFundMe page.
