Irish woman appalled after price of sandwich she always gets jumps from €3.50 to €5

It’s no secret that the cost of almost everything we buy has increased over recent months.

From the cost of heating and lighting a home to purchasing groceries and self-care products - everyone’s pockets are feeling the pinch in Ireland.

One Trinity Economist has warned that Ireland’s situation will “worsen”, before saying we should avoid another recession.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, he said “We’re not immune from what is affecting the rest of the world.

“The effect of the Ukraine war and higher energy prices and as a result of that higher interest rates – all of that is going to slow down the world economy”.

As things continue to increase, the public has begun speaking out about some of the simple pleasures that are now seeing up to 40% hikes.

One woman took to Instagram (@castlequarterhouse) to share that her local supermarket had increased the prices of their deli items by “40-something percent” and now others are sharing their stories of shock over the cost of everyday items.

Cat started by saying she would rarely eat out during the day. She lives very close to her office and so would generally just go home to eat.

However, this week she decided to ‘go absolutely mad’ and treat herself by getting a sandwich in the local shop which is normally €3.50.

All that was in the sandwich was turkey, lettuce, coleslaw, and brown bread and it was €5.00.

Cat mentioned to the shop assistant that there must have been a mistake, to which they said, “No, no, they’ve recalibrated all the machines, we know all the prices have gone up but we don’t know by how much”.

“That’s a 40-something percent rise,” Cat said, and after posting her story on Instagram hundreds of people began sharing similar stories of major price hikes in their areas.

But Cat says it has gotten to the point where people are just accepting it and it’s ‘ridiculous’ before adding that “no, their wages haven’t gone up either”.

The Irish Mirror has contacted Supervalu for more details on these apparent recent price hikes.
