Irish woman, 20s, hospitalised after being spiked on night out in Cork

A young woman was left on a drip and needing oxygen after she was spiked on a night out in Cork.

The woman, aged in her 20s, headed out with friends in the city last Saturday but began to feel very unwell after her first drink.

She decided to get a taxi home with her friend but just minutes later she started to have a seizure and went unconscious before her friend rushed her to hospital.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, told the Irish Mirror: "I woke up in the emergency room in the hospital shaking, hyperventilating and having constant seizures while not knowing what was going on and no idea how I got there.

"The result after several tests turned out I had been spiked and overdosed by Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (known as GHB). A common drug associated with rape and sexual assault."

She added: "I am extremely lucky and forever grateful my friend with me never left my side and bravely made the right choice by not letting me go home and bringing me straight to hospital, which was vital in me surviving the overdose.

"I was extremely unwell and spent all night in the hospital on several drops and oxygen."

The woman added that her drink never left her hand and she still doesn't know how someone spiked her.

She said she is still struggling after the situation, adding: "I am definitely suffering with sleeping it keeps me up at night thinking what could have happened, I cancelled any weekend plans I had coming up."

There were 39 reports of alleged ‘spiking by injection’ reported to gardai in 2021, particularly during the last quarter.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror on Tuesday, a Garda spokesperson said: “An Garda Siochana has confirmed that it has received a number of reports (39 in total), relating to allegations of ‘spiking by injections’, specifically during the last quarter of 2021. There have been no reports to date in 2022.

“An Garda Síochána has taken all these reports seriously and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact nature of each incident."
