The train was packed with other tourists and had slowed for views of a scenic spot when the accident occurred.
Local media have reported that Mr Ward may have been trying to take a photograph when he fell about seven or eight metres down the slope from the train.
Outlets local to Thailand have also said that the incident may have been captured by another tourist.
A post-mortem is due to be carried out in the Asian country.
It is believed Mr Ward was an Irish citizen, who was originally born in New Zealand.
A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and stands ready to provide consular assistance."
