Following his arrest, the teen was taken into the official gardai van but made his escape via the vehicle door.
Gardai have confirmed that he is still at large and has not returned to custody.
A video has circulated on social media of the teen escaping from the side door of a garda van as officers continue to search for his whereabouts.
Gardai confirmed to Galway Beo that a male youth absconded from the garda van on Friday night and that enquiries are 'ongoing'.
In the video, the van is waiting outside Galway shopping centre, and the van's door can be seen peeling away from the roof, whereupon the male teen emerges, jumps out and runs across the road and out of sight.
The video was taken outside Galway shopping centre on Friday night, November 4.
According to gardai, the teen absconded from the vehicle while gardai were conducting further enquiries.
A gardai spokesperson said: "Following the arrest of a male youth (aged in his teens) on suspicion of theft, the male absconded from the official Garda van while Gardaí were conducting further enquiries into the incident.
"Enquiries are ongoing at this time."
