Irish soldier killed on peacekeeping mission in Lebanon after convoy came under attack

One Irish soldier has been killed in Lebanon and another has been seriously injured after a convoy came under attack.

He was serving as part of a UN peacekeeping mission in the 121st Infantry Battalion.

The incident happened at around 9.15pm Irish time when two armed vehicles, carrying eight people, were travelling to Beirut. The convoy came "under small arms fire", according to a statement from the Defence Forces, and four peacekeeping soldiers were hit.
