Irish Rail services suspended in Cork due to 'false alarm' as emergency vehicles rush to scene of 'incident'

Irish Rail services were suspended between two stations in Cork today due to a suspected "emergency incident".

However, Irish Rail has now confirmed that the incident is believed to have been a false alarm and expects the line to be reopened soon.

A spokesperson told Cork Beo: "Emergency services attended to address reported possible incident on (the) line. However, at this time it appears to be a false alarm and we expect the line to reopen very shortly."

Irish Rail have re-opened the line but they say there are delays of up to 60 minutes to services.

Trains were stopped between Cork city and Mallow earlier today as emergency services attended the scene.

The incident was understood to have happened adjacent to the train line shortly before 1.30pm today.

It caused chaos for commuters with hundreds left waiting over an hour and a half for buses that Irish Rail organised to bring travellers to Mallow.

Cork Beo obtained footage showing hundreds of passengers standing at Kent Station awaiting updates.

Previously an Irish Rail spokesperson said: "Services are currently suspended between Mallow/Cork until further notice as emergency services attend adjacent to the line. Update to follow."
