The eagerly-awaited Irish pub which is bringing new life to the former home of a much-loved city nightclub has announced its opening date.
The Dubliner, which has been taking shape inside the old Julie's nightclub on Newcastle Quayside, has generated a huge amount of interest over recent weeks as work gathered pace on transforming the building's interior. The independent venture is Daniel Van Hymus' first pub and he is out to create the look and feel of the kind of venue found in Dublin's famed Temple Bar area.
News of his progress has been closely followed by many fans of the old Julie's who are looking forward to seeing the former nightspot back in use and making a return to the social scene. Dan's initial hope had been for The Dubliner to open in time for June 9, Newcastle's big weekend of the Blaydon Race and Sam Fender's double date at St James' Park.

But, despite working flat-out on the transformation of the closed-down venue, he was forced to postpone the launch and has now announced a new opening date of June 30. In a message to his Facebook followers, he explained: "We've had to take a few extra steps to ensure the sustainability of the old Julie's nightclub which hasn't been operated in about two decades."
The 23-year-old said he is "buzzing" to be able to now announce the new opening date and the first musician who will be taking to the stage: Irish singer-songwriter - and Temple Bar performer - Dan Elliott. The Dubliner is set to host nightly live music plus a menu boasting pies and beers including, of course, famous Irish stout Guinness.
Dan, who said support for the pub has been "unbelievable", also recently launched a buy-a-brick campaign, inviting customers to support the pub in return for having their name featured on the wall inside; adding to the building's history. Among the comments on Facebook ahead of its launch is one saying: "Nice cold pint of Guinness and live music, doesn't get much better than that" while another says: "I hope you'll be serving Guinness the way they do in Temple Bar and not extra cold."
No tickets are needed for the June 30 opening of The Dubliner and Dan said: "It's just going to be a massive party."
