Irish mother with newborn finds herself homeless after leaving hospital as she pleads for room

A young woman who has found herself homeless after a spell in hospital is pleading for a room in Cork.

36-year-old Kim gave birth two months ago but, following complications, had to undergo surgery. Her baby daughter has been kept in hospital since the birth.

After being discharged, Kim came back to her home to find she had lost her accommodation, and now she's desperate to find somewhere to go, CorkBeo reports.

The Kerry woman who's lived in Cork for the last four years says she borrowed money to stay in a B&B and that a friend is lending her a car which she may have to sleep in if she doesn't get anything.

She had to leave the BnB on Monday morning and she doesn't know where her next steps will take her.

She had tried to get emergency accommodation from Cork City Council, but says was told she should seek it in Kerry instead as that's where she's from.

"My funds are gone, I've borrowed money to stay in a B&B but I can't borrow any more. A friend of mine is loaning me a car and it's looking like I'll have to sleep there," she explained.

"I haven't eaten in five days, I'm living off water from the tap. I'm on heavy medication because of my surgery and that doesn't go well with an empty stomach.

"This just makes me feel like the worst mum in the world. I have a history of mental health issues but I was doing so well, now I'm suffering from very bad postnatal depression."

Kim admitted that she was extremely worried about the toll her situation is having on her mental health, and feels like she has no one to go to for help, saying: "I've tried everywhere, but I feel like no one will help women in my situation."

She said that she's not fussy when looking for accommodation, she just wants somewhere she can sleep and access a bus route.

"I have great references, I worked all my life until I had to stop a year ago because of complications with my pregnancy. I don't drink and I don't do drugs. I've never ever looked for help or been in a situation like this, I've always paid my bills."

She told CorkBeo that all she's looking for is "a small break" as she looks for somewhere safe and secure to live, admitting that she has felt taken advantage of by people who have contacted her after she took to social media to look for accommodation.

Kim is hoping that someone will see her story, and be able to help her adding: "I'm 36 and a single girl, I just need the place for myself for the foreseeable as my baby will be in hospital for a long time yet, I'm not fussy about room size or condition."
