Irish Lidl shoppers flummoxed as they spot major change in supermarket

Lidl shoppers have been flummoxed after spotting a major change in some of their supermarkets.

It appears that the plastic screens at checkouts, which were erected during Covid, are being removed.

The incident came to light when a Reddit user shared their encounter at an Irish Lidl store, sparking a flurry of discussion.

They said: “Lidl checkout screens removed. Must be happened in last few days at most, have other supermarkets done likewise or are they leading the way?”

The post quickly gained traction, with fellow users chiming in with their own encounters of the screens vanishing seemingly overnight.

According to shoppers, the disappearance of the screens seems to be widespread, affecting Lidl stores in various towns and cities across Ireland.

One person said: “They've been removing them over the last few months. I think it's probably a case of removing them as part of scheduled maintenance rather than removing then from all stores at once.”

Another added: “My local Lidl has had them gone for weeks.”

A third commented: “In my local Lidl, a few screens are down. Some are still up.”

Some praised the decision, with one person writing: “Good. Trying to squeeze your hand and phone through that hole to scan your digital card was a pain.”

While others argued: “I hate that shops are removing them.. Wish they would just leave them there.”

Others spotted more outlets also removing their screens.

One person said: “My local pharmacy just removed theirs finally yesterday too.”

Another added: “Local shop removed there's recently. Such a pain in the hole trying to take the shopping when you have to reach under the thing constantly.”

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a Lidl Ireland spokesperson said: "Protective screens were introduced to Lidl stores nationwide from March 2020. They were introduced as a temporary Covid 19 measure to ensure the safety of our store colleagues and customers. Screens will be removed across all stores due to the decrease in risk and to enhance communication with customers at the checkout."
