Irish dad and homeless service volunteer remembered as 'caring gentleman' after sad death

Tributes have been pouring in following the death of a beloved Irish dad who was also a homeless service volunteer.

David Johnson, who lived in Mallow, Co Cork, sadly passed away on Sunday leaving his family and friends heartbroken, CorkBeo reports.

People will be saying their goodbyes to the loving father whose funeral mass took place this morning before he was taken to his final resting place in St Gobnait's Cemetery in the north Cork town.

Homeless Help and Support were amongst those remembering David this week, describing him as a "gentleman" who "treated service users and other volunteers with respect, humour, and kindness".

They said: "We are all trying to get our head around the news of David Johnson's passing. A gentleman, a charmer, always the smile. He volunteered with us from the early years. He treated service users and other volunteers with respect, humour and kindness.

"Our thoughts are with his family, his children (whom he adored) and his large circle of friends. We were blessed to have him in our lives and he will be so missed.

"Rest in Peace Dave."

Others also told of a "gentle" person who "had a huge heart to give".

One said: "Such a caring gentle person. He will be greatly missed. Thinking of his heartbroken family at this sad time. Rest in peace David."

Another said: "My deepest sympathies to his family and close friends. Many a time did I see David do kind acts to help those in such vulnerable situations. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

A post on RIP.ie reads: "The death has taken place of David Johnson, The Fairways, Old Course, Mallow who passed away on August 21st 2022.

"Sadly missed by his heartbroken mother Ann, father Gerard, children Aleshia, Daniel and Zachary, their mother Teresa, sister Sarah, brother Lee, brother-in-law John, uncle Patrick, aunts Mary, Elizabeth and Bridie, nephew Jacob, niece Eliza, extended family and friends.

"Lying in repose at O'Connell's Funeral Home, St. James' Avenue, Mallow on Tuesday (August 23rd) from 6pm to 7pm followed by Prayers.

"Funeral Service in O'Connell's Funeral Home on Wednesday (August 24th) at 11.30am followed by burial in St. Gobnait's Cemetery, Mallow."
