Ireland weather warnings as temperatures plummet below freezing with rain, hail, thunder on the way

Met Eireann has issued a number of weather warnings as unsettled weather takes hold.

Freezing temperatures, heavy rain, hail, thunder and strong winds are all forecast over the coming days.

A Status Yellow Rain warning for Louth, Monaghan and Donegal is in place until 8pm.

The alert reads: “Heavy pulses of rain may lead to flooding in places.”

A separate Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for Cork and Kerry.

It comes into force at 8pm and lasts until 4am with Met Eireann warning: “Particularly strong west to northwest winds are expected for a time this evening and tonight with gusts in excess of 100 km/h.”

The warnings come as part of a very unsettled week of weather.

Tonight will see temperatures plummet below freezing. The meteorological service said: “Some scattered outbreaks of rain will occur, along with mist and fog patches. Where clear skies persist, frost will develop too. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 5C. Staying very blustery in the south and southwest with strong and gusty westerly winds. Moderate variable breezes elsewhere.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it continued: “Scattered outbreaks of rain on Tuesday, mainly across the east and southwest. Longer drier spells too with some sunshine getting through. Highest temperatures of 7C to 11C, in mostly moderate southwesterly breezes.

“Wet and breezy weather will track up from the southwest overnight. Clearing to scattered showers later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 6C in moderate to fresh southerly winds.”

Met Eireann’s forecast for Wednesday includes the potential for hail and thunder.

It said: “Blustery on Wednesday with sunny spells and scattered showers, some with hail and thunder, especially closer to the Atlantic coast. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C in fresh to strong southwest winds.

“Showers will persist across Atlantic counties with long clearer spells elsewhere. Outbreaks of rain will develop in western areas before dawn. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 6C, in moderate, occasionally fresh southerly winds.”

There will be more of the same on Thursday. Its forecast reads: “Rather wet and windy with spells of rain tracking eastwards through the day. Scattered showers following from the west. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C in fresh to strong south to southwest winds.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, Met Eireann said: “Breezy on Friday with outbreaks of rain spreading from the west and south. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C in moderate to fresh southerly winds.”
