Ireland weather: Thundery downpours expected today as expert pinpoints return of spring conditions

Ireland is in for a miserable say today (March 29) according to Met Eireann’s latest forecast, as heavy rain and thundery downpours are expected nationwide.

The Irish meteorologists have also suggested there could be spot flooding today in some areas before the remaining showers clear into the Irish Sea later tonight.

Rainy conditions are expected to continue well into the weekend, however, next week is due to see the return of some more springtime weather.

Alan O’Reilly, an Irish weather expert took to social media with his latest predictions. He said April 4 will bring good dry weather - however, where the expected high-pressure system will affect is yet to be determined.

Carlow Weather tweeted: “Weather model trends continue to show a signal for higher pressure from around the 4th of April with a good chance of more settled dry weather. Uncertainty around where exactly the high pressure will be positioned though”.

Here is Met Eireann’s forecast for the days ahead:

Today

Dull, damp and breezy this morning with patches of mist and drizzle - some coastal fog too, especially in the southeast. A band of more persistent rain will move up from the southwest during the morning.

While sunny spells will develop in the afternoon, thundery showers will follow, with possible spot flooding and isolated thunderstorms. Blustery too, in fresh and gusty southwest winds, strong at times in the west. Another mild day with highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Becoming mostly dry and clear early tonight as any remaining showers clear into the Irish Sea, though further scattered heavy showers will feed into Atlantic coastal counties later. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in moderating south to southwest winds.

Thursday

Thursday will bring sunny spells and scattered showers, locally heavy or thundery. Cloud and outbreaks of rain will feed into southern counties during the evening. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in mostly moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

Outbreaks of rain will spread northwards overnight, heaviest and most persistent in southern counties. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in variable winds, fresh to strong at times near coasts.

Friday

Cloudy or dull with outbreaks of rain, driest early on in the north and later brightening up in the west but with some heavy showers possible too. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees, in mostly moderate northwesterly winds.

Saturday

Cool and breezy with sunny spells and occasional showers, possibly heavy or thundery later. Highest temperatures 9 to 12 degrees, in rather brisk northwest winds. Becoming drier and clearer after dark, but chilly with frost setting in as temperatures widely dip close to freezing.

Sunday

A drier, brighter and calmer day is likely with sunny spells and just isolated light showers. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, in just light northerly breezes.
