Ireland weather: Temperatures to plummet to freezing point as risk of snow increases

Temperatures will hit freezing point in parts of Ireland tonight - as the risk of snow grows closer and the tail end of a hurricane passes towards the island.

It's been a relatively pleasant start for many people this Thursday with conditions starting to steady after a wicked few days which saw wind and rain batter the country.

However, we shouldn't get used to the calm spell as there's more rain and wind on the way and things are about to get an awful lot nippier to go alongside it.

Yesterday, a mini-tornado hit parts of Wexford, with one farmer from the area saying that it flattened the walls of a nearby farmyard and ripped the roof off sheds, as well causing damage to buildings and bringing a large number of trees down.

On Thursday afternoon, we'll get more stormy weather, as Met Éireann say that showers in Munster and Connacht will "extend northwards over Leinster. Some will be heavy with hail or thunder possible. Much of Ulster will stay largely dry. Quite cool with highs of 8 to 12C."

Overnight is when things get chilly, with lowest temperatures of 0 to 5C.

Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing (0C). If the ground temperature is at or below freezing, the snow will reach the ground.

It likely won't fall on Thursday, but it does lend itself to a recent prediction from a weather expert.

Weather indicating model WX Charts show we won't have to wait long until the first flakes fall in the UK and Ireland.

According to the charts, Sunday November 13 is the date - with parts of Scotland seeing snow.

That, at the moment, is set to progress southwestward, and could head for Ireland.

Met Eireann is currently not forecasting any snow for Ireland.
