Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues yellow warning as four counties set to be battered by ​110km/h winds

Four counties in the west of Ireland have been placed under a status yellow wind warning as "very strong winds" and heavy rain are set to batter the country this afternoon.

Met Eireann issued the alert for Clare, Cork, Kerry and Galway which will come into effect at 1pm on Wednesday and will remain in place until 7pm.

The national forecaster has predicted wind speeds of up 110km/h and said there is a potential "for localised spray and wave overtopping along Atlantic coasts."

Met Eireann said: "Very strong and gusty west to southwest winds during Wednesday afternoon and evening.

"Gusts of up to 90 to 110km/h, strongest winds in exposed areas. Potential for localised spray and wave overtopping along Atlantic coasts.

The national forecaster added: "This morning, persistent or heavy rain in Ulster and north Leinster will gradually clear to the northeast. Sunny spells and occasional heavy showers today with hail and isolated thunderstorms possible.

"This afternoon and evening will become very windy along the west coast with very strong, gusty westerly winds. High waves developing also.

"Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees."

In addition, in five counties in Northern Ireland, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry, were placed under a yellow weather alert for rain by the UK Met Office.

The alert will remain in place from 5am to 10am on Wednesday as heavy rain may lead to some flooding and disruption to travel in those areas.
