Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue urgent warning before big wintry change hits within days

Met Eireann have issued an urgent weather warning for one county with strong winds set to batter the north of the country.

A Status Yellow wind alert is in place for Donegal from 11am until 4pm on Sunday, with gusts of up to 100km/h possible at times.

The warning reads: "West to northwest winds will widely reach mean speeds of 50 to 60km/h with gusts of 90 to 100km/h. Winds will be stronger near coastal areas, where localised wave overtopping is possible, and on high ground."

Meanwhile there could also be thunderstorms in northern areas on Sunday before temperatures drop below freezing overnight.

A Met Eireann forecaster said; "A cold and windy start with widespread showers but some sunny spells will develop too as the showers begin to ease in the afternoon.

"Areas in the north of the country will see showers of sleet and hail with the chance of an isolated thunderstorm also possible. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees but it will feel colder in fresh to strong northwest winds. The winds will be strongest in the northwest with gales in exposed areas this morning and afternoon.

"The showers will gradually clear as the winds ease leaving much of the country dry by late evening. With light winds and clear skies temperatures are set to drop to -1 to 4 degrees with frost and ice possible for areas in the north and east."

And the early days of next week will be unsettled at times before it is expected to turn colder towards the end of the week as temperatures plummet as low as -2C.

A forecaster added: "Cloud will build from the west on Monday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading across the country in the morning. The rain will ease by afternoon with some clear spells developing in the southeast. A band of more persistent rain will move down from the northwest in the evening. A mild day with highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees and light southerly winds changing to a fresh westerly in the afternoon, increasing strong in the northwest.

"Another mild day on Tuesday with blustery outbreaks of rain. However, parts of the east and southeast will stay dry with some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in mostly fresh southwest winds.

"Sunshine and scattered showers on Wednesday, some wintry in the west and northwest. Staying drier and brighter in the east. Highest afternoon temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees but feeling cold in a westerly breeze.

"A cold evening on Wednesday night with a few showers for western and northern areas. Clear and drier in the southeast. Feeling even colder in a brisk westerly breeze. Frost and ice too, especially for sheltered areas overnight with lows of -2 to 2 degrees.

"There will be plenty of bright and sunny spells across the country on Thursday, but a few showers will feed in from the north and west through the day. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees, but feeling colder in brisk northwesterlies. Cold overnight with lows of -2 to 1 degrees with frost and ice expected.

"A cold, but bright day on Friday with sunny spells and staying mostly dry apart from a few showers in the north and west. Cold in the evening with frost and ice expected again, as temperatures are set drop below freezing overnight."
