Ireland has basked in the winter sunshine over the past number of days as temperatures remained rather mild thanks to foehn winds.
However, conditions are set to take a turn this week as temperatures fall below zero, with torrential downpours expected.
A forecaster said on Tuesday: “Showers largely dying out tonight and clear spells developing with temperatures dropping back to as low as 0c and some light frost possible. A nice bright start again Wednesday and staying dry for many during daylight hours tomorrow.”

They added: “Still some heavy showers, especially in the East.”
Looking ahead to Saturday, they said: “Outdoor plans for Saturday? Keep an eye on the weather forecasts, it is looking rather wet and windy at present. Could be a day for the couch or the high stool.”
Meanwhile, today will be mainly dry with sunny spells. However, there will be some showers in east Ulster and along parts of the west coast.
In the late afternoon and evening, rain will develop in coastal areas of Munster. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees, with mostly light variable breezes.
Tonight, showers will affect many coastal counties around the country. It will be mainly dry further inland, with perhaps some patches of mist or fog and a touch of grass frost. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with light breezes.
Thursday morning will be mainly dry, with sunny spells and a few showers. Through the afternoon and evening, rain will develop in east, and north Ulster and showers will develop in Connacht and west Munster.
Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with light to moderate west to northwest breezes.
Rain continuing in the south and southeast, gradually clearing into the Irish Sea overnight. Dry and clear spells elsewhere with scattered showers.
Light to moderate northerly winds, possible windier in the east and southeast. Lowest temperatures generally between 1 and 5 degrees.
Good sunny spells on Friday with passing showers, driest in the east of the country. Light to moderate southwest breezes.
Feeling chilly, with afternoon highs of 6 to 9 degrees.
Friday night will be cold, with a widespread frost likely in largely calm and clear conditions. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees.
Becoming very breezy or windy on Saturday in strengthening southerly winds with a spell of persistent rain developing. Highs of 7 to 11 degrees.
Drier Saturday night as winds ease and clear spells and occasional showers develop.
Sunday will see Showery conditions with some sunny spells in a moderate westerly airflow. Highs of 7 to 10 degrees.
