Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts mild conditions but expert pinpoints date big change is coming

Met Eireann has forecast mostly mild and breezy conditions over the next few days with some patchy light rain and sunny spells.

However, a weather expert said that current predictions show a big change in the weather on the way and pinpointed the exact date that colder weather could return.

Alan O'Reilly, who runs the Carlow Weather Twitter account, said that a 'cooler airmass' could move in over Ireland by next Tuesday.

This would cause temperatures to drop although Mr O'Reilly said is still very uncertain, and would be too early to predict a 'Beast from the East'-type storm or even snow.

He wrote: "The GFS weather model has flipped the medium term outlook in last few runs and shows a risk of a cooler airmass possibly moving in around the 7th.

"Very uncertain yet so don’t start talking about beasts or snow. Let’s keep an eye and see what other models show over coming days."

Meanwhile, here is Met Eireann's forecast for the rest of the week:

Wednesday 1st February

Blustery today, with showers or longer spells of rain at times most frequent over the northern half of the country. However, there will be a few sunny spells mixed in also. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in fresh or strong and gusty westerly winds, moderating during the evening.

Largely cloudy tonight with some patchy light rain or drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees, coldest in the southeast, in mostly moderate to fresh west to southwest winds with some mist and hill fog.

Thursday, February 2

A good deal of cloud tomorrow with just occasional bright or sunny spells developing. Dry apart from a little patchy light rain or drizzle, becoming persistent in the northwest later. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in fresh to strong west to southwest winds.

Occasional outbreaks of rain and drizzle will mainly affect the north and west on Thursday night. It will be a frost-free night with lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in moderate west to southwest winds.

Friday, February 3

Rather cloudy again on Friday with patches of light rain and drizzle, mainly in the west, with the sun breaking through occasionally further east. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.

Saturday, February 4

After a dry start, a spell of rain is expected on Saturday, moving southeastwards across the country. It will introduce a colder northwesterly wind in its wake. Temperatures in the daytime of 9 or 10 degrees over Ulster and Connacht and 11 or 12 degrees for Munster and Leinster, will give way to sub-zero temperatures Saturday night with a widespread frost setting in. Some mist and fog patches will develop too as the winds ease light and variable.

Further outlook

Current indications suggest that Sunday and Monday will be mainly dry days with some sunny spells, and although Sunday is expected to be a cold day, with frost after dark, it will turn slightly milder again on Monday.
